John Lennon - Working Class Hero
The Galini Coffee Lounge at the top of Camberley High Street was the place where many of us would hang out in the mid/late 1970s. The walk-up café attracted people from all walks of life, not least, fellow poets, writers, artists and musicians. Friends from those days like Jeremy Goodwin and Mick Magic, I'm still very much in contact with. Others, like Penelope McPhee, Briggitt Darling, Sean Duffy, Alan Guest, Jenny Slaughter and Henryk, I remember with affection. The jukebox was always the focal point and many great tunes were often played full blast, much to the bemusement of shoppers down in the street below.
I could put together a whole album of songs from that era, but one track, in particular, John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’ reminds me of those heady days, sipping frothy coffee at just 5p a go, long before drinking coffee itself became trendy. Hear it on YOUTUBE
